The LaPlant family farm has been a steadfast presence, not only in New Madrid County, Missouri but also as an enduring symbol of the American agricultural tradition. It has served as a unifying force, binding generations of the LaPlant family together and standing as a testament to their unwavering commitment to farming.
In 1792, long before Thomas Jefferson became president, Joseph LaPlante established the family farm approximately six miles north of New Madrid. This marked the beginning of a farming legacy that would span over two centuries. From Joseph, the tradition was passed down through succeeding generations, from William to George, Cecil, and Allan, with each family member continuing the noble pursuit of farming.
Today, more than 200 years later, the George W. LaPlant Estate remains in the capable hands of the LaPlante family. It is a rare accomplishment for a farm to remain within the same family for such an extended period of time, and in 2021, the estate was recognized as one of Missouri's bicentennial farms. The Missouri Founding Farms initiative, a collaboration between the Missouri Farm Bureau, MU Extension, and the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, identified just 30 farms across the state that have operated continuously under one family since before Missouri achieved statehood in 1821.
The significance of farms like the George W. LaPlant Estate extends beyond their longevity. They represent the stories of hard work, resilience, and dedication that have shaped our nation's agricultural heritage. The Missouri Century Farm Program and the annual Century Farm program created by the University of Missouri Extension and the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, in partnership with the Missouri Farm Bureau, have celebrated and recognized farms that have remained in the same family for 100 years or more.
The LaPlante family's commitment to their land and livelihoods is a testament to the enduring contributions that farmers and ranchers have made to the fabric of our country and state. From the earliest settlements to today's modern farming operations, farm families have played an indispensable role in Missouri's agricultural legacy and the nation's growth.
The George W. LaPlant Estate stands as a shining example of the deep roots, hard work, and generational dedication that have shaped our agricultural heritage. It is a testament to the resilience of farm families and their unwavering commitment to providing food for the nation. As the LaPlante family continues to nurture and cultivate their land, they honor the proud traditions of the past while embracing the future of farming.
